‘Bootcamp’ for Raccoons: US State Prepares Orphaned Cubs for Life in the Wild
In Mississippi, Woodside Wildlife Rescue prepares orphaned raccoons for survival through an intensive training program. Founder Paula Woodside’s center in Pass Christian cares for dozens of animals annually, feeding them indoors before moving them to an 18-hectare outdoor facility for vaccination and training. Staff teach cubs essential skills such as digging for worms, cracking pinecones, fishing, swimming behind kayaks, and climbing trees in response to simulated predator warnings. To ensure they retain natural wariness of humans, a volunteer captures them in a cage shortly before release. After six months of training, the raccoons undergo a graduation ceremony blessed by a local preacher before being released into a wooded area. Employee Raquel Priest describes the experience as letting children leave home, expressing joy at seeing them pursue their independent lives.
