Resomation, or body dissolution after death, draws closer: 'Many questions remain'
The Dutch cabinet is preparing to decide on resomation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis, which would add a fourth option to burial, cremation, and scientific donation. Health Council advisor Pieter Heerma (CDA) will soon submit the legislative proposal, following the Council's 2025 confirmation that the method meets safety and dignity standards. Funeral director Berry van Beek notes significant practical uncertainties regarding traditions and equipment costs, while Ludwig de Haan’s company Alko Eco awaits legal clarity before producing installations. Currently, cremation accounts for approximately 68 percent of deaths in the Netherlands.
