Canadian Province Sues OpenAI Over Role in Tumbler Ridge Deadly Shooting
The Canadian province of British Columbia has filed a lawsuit in California against OpenAI, alleging the company played a role in the February shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge. The attack, carried out by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, resulted in eight deaths and the perpetrator's suicide after planning with ChatGPT. Although OpenAI’s safety team detected warnings about gun violence, it deactivated her account without notifying police, allowing her to create a new one. Justice Minister Niki Sharma stated that residents deserve credible threats to be taken seriously, accusing OpenAI of failing to take meaningful safety steps. The province demands changes to how the company handles violent conversations. More than thirty victims' families have previously sued OpenAI for similar reasons, while Florida became the first U.S. state to sue the company in June over safety risks.
