ACM Seeks Greater Transparency Regarding Online Pricing Mechanisms
The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) urges companies to provide clearer explanations of how online prices are determined, citing consumer confusion and eroded trust. The regulator highlights that price algorithms cause significant fluctuations, such as airlines charging between 30 and 35 different amounts for the same seat. Although varying prices is legal, misconceptions persist; nearly half of consumers wrongly believe search history affects costs, while a quarter think their device matters. The ACM aims to foster a societal debate on algorithmic pricing to reduce uncertainty and mistrust among shoppers.
