Very Low Water Levels: No Northbound Shipping on the IJssel
Rijkswaterstaat has imposed one-way traffic on the IJssel river starting tomorrow due to water levels dropping below 1.45 meters, making two-way navigation unsafe. Ships traveling from Arnhem toward the north must detour approximately 300 kilometers via the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and Markermeer. Fiona Oomen of Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland noted that while the delay increases fuel costs and delivery times, the measure is preferable to a closed waterway, though it will cause congestion elsewhere.
