UMC Utrecht is calling on staff to remove pens from their pockets before submitting uniforms for washing, as ink stains cause hundreds of white garments to be discarded annually. Manager Celina Kroon highlighted the sustainability impact, noting that while automated scanners detect over 99% of foreign objects, plastic pens sometimes evade detection due to clothing folds. The hospital receives 14,000 items weekly for cleaning by CleanLease, which uses X-ray and camera technology to identify metal and non-metal items.
