The SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research investigated the pros and cons of a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs while driving. While such a ban provides clear rules and may slightly improve safety, it requires significantly more police resources for testing and blood analysis. The study found that enforcing a total ban could lead to fewer actual controls due to the increased workload, potentially undermining its goal. Traffic psychologist Sander van der Kint suggested lowering the alcohol limit from 0.5 to 0.2 per mille as a more feasible alternative, noting that the relationship between minor drug use and accident risk remains complex.
