Experiment with severely confused individuals under one roof
Rotterdam is launching a pilot program in Poortugaal to house 40 homeless individuals with severe psychiatric issues, addiction problems, and often mild intellectual disabilities. The initiative addresses a national shortage of long-term secure housing for this high-risk group, who currently face significant safety risks and lack adequate support. Laura van Goor from mental health provider Antes states that these residents require intensive supervision for up to eight years, as existing facilities offer either too little security or are limited to short stays. The project, supported by the Levensloopaanpak partnership, enforces strict drug policies while allowing controlled freedom, aiming to provide a sustainable solution for approximately 1,500 such individuals across the country.
