Dutch Consumers Spend 9 Percent More at Foreign Supermarkets
According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), Dutch consumers spent approximately 117 million euros more at foreign supermarkets in the first half of the year, marking a 9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Transaction volumes rose from roughly 45 million to over 51 million, with total annual expenditures for 2025 estimated at 3 billion euros. While Efmi research indicates that average grocery prices in the Netherlands are not higher than in Germany or Belgium, consumers perceive them as such and seek lower prices for specific brands and offers. Additionally, DNB data shows a 20 percent rise in cross-border fuel transactions, totaling 1.5 billion euros.
