Contrails are a major polluter; researchers say addressing them could prevent ten years of warming
A new report by the environmental organization Transport & Environment states that mitigating aircraft contrails could delay aviation-induced global warming by up to ten years. Vincent Meijer, a researcher at TU Delft, explains that these artificial ice clouds trap heat significantly more than CO2 in the short term. While most contrails dissipate quickly, those forming in extremely humid air layers persist and cause substantial warming. The solution involves adjusting flight altitudes to avoid these specific atmospheric regions, though current weather models struggle to predict their exact locations.
