Merwede Bridge Reopens After Maintenance, Earlier Than Expected
The Merwede Bridge on the A27 near Gorinchem has reopened to traffic earlier than anticipated after Rijkswaterstaat completed maintenance work. The bridge received a thinner asphalt layer, reducing its weight by approximately 400 tons to ensure safety while a new parallel structure is being constructed. A speed limit of 70 km/h remains in place, and trucks and tour buses are still prohibited from crossing due to steel strength issues identified in July. Although police enforced this ban with fines in August, some commercial vehicles continue to use the bridge despite the restrictions.
