ACM Demands Greater Transparency in How Online Prices for Tickets and Products Are Determined
The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) urges companies to provide clearer explanations of how online prices are set, citing widespread consumer confusion regarding pricing mechanisms at webshops, event organizers, and airlines. The regulator highlights that misconceptions about price algorithms damage trust, noting that nearly half of consumers incorrectly believe previous searches or device types influence ticket costs. While charging different prices is legal, the ACM found that dynamic pricing, which can result in 30 to 35 different fares for a single flight seat, increases uncertainty and suspicion among buyers.
