Return to the Burned Nature Reserve Boshuizerbergen: 'So Much Heath Has Disappeared, It Is Unrecognizable'
The Boshuizerbergen nature reserve in Limburg has reopened to visitors following a major forest fire in early August that destroyed approximately 100 hectares of heath and forest. While the area is now safe for walkers, the landscape remains devastated, with significant loss of rare juniper bushes and damaged trees that required removal. Loek Hendrikx of Het Limburgs Landschap described the destruction as a bitter pill for this protected Natura 2000 site, noting that many ancient junipers over 130 years old were lost. Visitors expressed shock at the unrecognizable terrain, though some noted surviving vegetation.
