Falling Accidents Cause Record Number of Deaths in the Netherlands
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), falling accidents caused the death of over 7,800 people in 2025, an increase from more than 7,300 the previous year. The rising trend is attributed to an aging population, with over three-quarters of victims aged 80 or older. Mortality rates per 100,000 residents rose to 43 last year compared to 41 in 2024 and just over 20 in 2015. Most incidents occur during winter months due to slippery conditions, while summer sees the fewest fatalities. Additionally, SafetyNL reported that 124,000 individuals aged 65 and older visited emergency care after falls last year, with nearly 80 percent sustaining serious injuries.
