Health Council Opposes Routine Thirteen-Week Ultrasound: Hundreds of False Positives
The Dutch Health Council advises against the routine implementation of the thirteen-week ultrasound, a prenatal screening intended to detect serious abnormalities in unborn children. Research commissioned by the Ministry of Health found that results are often inaccurate, with 775 false positives and at least 150 missed abnormalities among nearly 130,000 scans conducted between 2021 and 2022. Vice-chair Selma Tromp stated that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits, reversing the council's previous support for the procedure.
