Investigation Council: 7,000 Children in Emergency Asylum Housing Structurally Neglected
The Dutch Investigation Council for Safety has issued a urgent recommendation that Minister of Asylum Van den Brink improve conditions for 7,000 children in emergency asylum housing within six months. After a two-year study, the council described the current situation as structural neglect and the normalization of insecurity, citing risks of physical and sexual violence, lack of privacy, and frequent relocations that disrupt schooling. Council chairman Chris van Dam criticized the absence of political will and robust governance, noting that 60% of all asylum locations are now emergency facilities housed in inappropriate buildings like offices and containers. The council also published an open letter to municipal councils urging them to contribute to safety improvements and called for maximum time limits on placements in such facilities.
