Significantly Fewer Votes for AfD in Second Round of Lower Saxony Elections, Resulting in No Mayor Positions
The far-right AfD party failed to secure any mayor positions in the second round of elections in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony. In three municipalities where runoff votes were held, AfD candidates received significantly fewer votes than their opponents. CDU candidate Frank Klingebiel won Salzgitter with 74.7 percent of the vote against AfD’s Patricia Mair. Independent candidate Anna Adamczak defeated AfD’s Christoph Weynand in Münster with 80.5 percent of the vote. Additionally, independent Jens Lüer won in Bockenem with 69.6 percent of the vote against AfD candidate Felix Mull.
