Vollering Leads Solo in Thrilling Women's Road Race Final, Pieterse Chases
Demi Vollering established a solo lead during the women's road race final at the World Championships after attacking 38 kilometers from the finish. While Vollering extended her advantage to 22 seconds on the Mont Real, Lotte Kopecky crashed in a major pile-up that eliminated several favorites. Anna van der Breggen and other contenders were also affected by crashes, with Niamh Fisher-Black and Magdeleine Vallieres dropping out. Pieterse joined the chasing group, attempting to close the gap as Vollering remained unchallenged. Swedish rider Caroline Andersson was hospitalized following a crash but is conscious and able to move her limbs.
