Research from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen explains why small laundry items like socks enter duvet covers but rarely exit. The cover acts as a one-way trap where friction and limited space make escape significantly harder than entry. While earlier theories suggested water turbulence during drum reversals pushed items inside, this study highlights that once trapped, garments are hindered by reduced mobility and increased resistance, leading to a net accumulation within the cover.
