Former Executive of Belgian Chip Manufacturer Suspected of Espionage for China
A former executive of Belgian chipmaker Belgan is suspected of passing company secrets to China, according to the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office. The 52-year-old, who led the research department, was arrested in May 2026 at Brussels Airport while preparing to fly to Beijing. He holds both Chinese and Belgian nationalities and lived in Leuven. Belgan, which specialized in semiconductors for electric vehicles, aerospace, and military, was acquired by a Chinese firm in 2021 and declared bankrupt in mid-2024. Authorities are seeking a second suspect, Alan Zhen Zhou.
