Parents' Contribution for Nearly Free Childcare in 2029 to Be Slightly Higher
Starting in 2029, parents will pay a slightly higher contribution for childcare than previously planned, as the government reduces the reimbursement rate from 96% to 95.6%. Minister Thierry Aartsen (VVD) stated in a letter to parliament that this adjustment is necessary because implementing and overseeing the new system costs more than initially expected. The new model aims to replace the current childcare allowance scheme, which currently allows parents to claim monthly reimbursements based on income. Although the new system requires an additional 60 million euros annually, the ministry has 350 million euros less available in its budget. Civil servants note that the childcare sector has not yet been informed of the lower reimbursement rate. The legislative proposal is ready for legal review by the Council of State before parliamentary approval.
