Opt-out law yields few extra organ donations
A study by the Dutch Transplant Foundation reveals that the 2021 opt-out organ donation law resulted in only about 50 additional donors annually. While 59% of cases with no prior registration did not proceed due to family objections, researchers attribute the modest increase partly to technical innovations. Frustration persists among medical staff regarding family negotiations, highlighting a need for better communication as over 1,000 patients remain on kidney transplant waiting lists.
