Parents Attempt to Give Baby Compound Surname, but Court Intervenes
A Dutch couple was denied their request to give their newborn a compound surname after the mother could not sign the birth registration due to a C-section. Although a municipal official initially processed the change in April 2025, authorities later ruled that both parents must jointly sign for a double surname before or at the time of birth registration. The court upheld the strict legal requirement, rejecting the parents' frustration and any exceptions based on misinformation from hospital staff. Consequently, the child’s name was reverted to solely the father's surname.
