Government presents ambitious housing plan, but 100,000 homes remains a heavy task
The Dutch cabinet has unveiled an action plan aiming to build 100,000 new homes annually by 2035 to address the housing shortage. Housing Minister Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan and Prime Minister Jetten presented the 50-point strategy, which relies on previously announced measures and 31 large-scale building locations. However, experts like Peter Boelhouwer question the feasibility, citing insufficient funding, grid congestion, nitrogen issues, and rising costs due to geopolitical tensions. While the housing deficit is projected to decrease slightly from 4.8% in 2025 to 4.6% in 2026, it remains at 384,000 units, with the target of 2% not expected until 2041.
