Former Syrian Prison Director Sentenced to 60 Years in US for Torture
Samir Ousman Alsheikh, the former director of Damascus’s Adra prison under President Assad, was sentenced to 60 years in the United States for torture and fraud. The 74-year-old was convicted of ordering subordinates to physically and psychologically abuse prisoners to break their resistance. He also lied to immigration services about his past to obtain a residence permit. His lawyers plan to appeal the verdict, which marks the highest-ranking Assad official convicted outside Syria.
