Football Clubs Create Separate Leagues Due to Aggression on the Fields
Football clubs in the Randstad region have started separate competitions for veterans, frustrated by aggressive atmospheres during many KNVB amateur matches. The 'KelderLeague', initiated by VFC Vlaardingen, now includes over twenty teams from eleven clubs for the 2024-2025 season. Similar initiatives exist in Westland and The Hague, focusing on sportsmanship and positive culture. Last season, 1,200 out of 835,000 matches escalated seriously, according to the KNVB. Organizers stress selection is based on sportsmanship, not background. The KNVB regrets these splits but supports measures for safer matches.
