Gouden Griffel 2026 Awarded to Deceased Author Sjoerd Kuyper
The CPNB announced on Thursday that the late author Sjoerd Kuyper won the Gouden Griffel 2026 for his book "Maantje verhuist de zee." Kuyper, who died at age 74 on Tuesday, had previously received the award while on his deathbed surrounded by his wife and publisher. The story follows nine-year-old Maantje and her grandmother, with illustrations by Sanne te Loo. Kuyper was a prominent figure in Dutch children's literature, having won the Gouden Griffel in 1996 and eight Zilveren Griffels throughout his career. He also received the Theo Thijssen Prize in 2012 for his entire body of work. Additionally, illustrator Karst-Janneke Rogaar won the Gouden Penseel 2026 for "Lucy en Donker," which she both wrote and illustrated.
