Court Rules in Favor of Wakker Dier: NS Must Display Posters or Face €25,000 Daily Fine
The Dutch animal welfare organization Wakker Dier won a legal case against railway operator NS, which had refused to display posters for its 'Eat No Animal Day' campaign on the grounds that the message was too controversial. The court in Utrecht ruled that NS discriminated by allowing other political and commercial advertisements while rejecting this one, ordering the company to place the posters or face a daily fine of €25,000 up to a maximum of €100,000. Esmee van Vliet of Wakker Dier welcomed the decision as a victory for freedom of expression, while NS spokesperson Kiran Hofker stated they respect the ruling and will use it to improve future advertising decisions. The campaign is scheduled to run from September 28 to October 4.
