Fifth Person with West Nile Virus Dies, RIVM Reports 16 New Cases in a Week
The Netherlands has recorded its fifth death linked to the West Nile virus, bringing the total number of confirmed human infections to 44. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported 16 new cases over the past week, all resulting from mosquito bites. South Holland accounts for the majority of infections with 23 cases, followed by Utrecht with ten. Other affected provinces include North Holland, North Brabant, Gelderland, and Overijssel. While the virus is confirmed in these fatalities, it is not necessarily the direct cause of death.
