Experts advise against panic as the West Nile virus appears to be a permanent fixture in the Netherlands. Barry Rockx from Wageningen University explains that the virus is transmitted by Culex pipiens mosquitoes after they feed on infected migratory birds. While most infections are asymptomatic or cause mild flu-like symptoms, approximately one percent of cases can lead to severe neurological complications such as encephalitis, with mortality rates rising significantly for individuals over 70. The disease does not spread between humans, though rare exceptions exist via blood transfusions. With the virus now detected in various locations, it is expected to become an annual occurrence, prompting doctors to remain vigilant for neurological symptoms.
