Municipality Launches Checks on Ghost Tenancies to Combat Drug Trafficking and Illegal Sex Work
The municipality of Rijswijk has begun inspections to verify if residents actually live at their registered addresses, aiming to prevent criminal activities such as drug trafficking and illegal sex work. Burgomaster Huri Sahin stated that the checks target properties used for illicit purposes rather than legitimate housing. Initial inspections revealed two issues: one individual was found residing at an address where they were not registered in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP), and another property in the Stationskwartier was being used as an Airbnb. The case involving the unregistered resident is being processed for registration, while the Airbnb issue has been referred to the local property brigade for further investigation. Authorities emphasize that these targeted controls are prepared based on signals and aim to improve safety and living conditions by ensuring homes are used as intended.
