Hockey goalkeeper Visser retires from international duty to prepare for upcoming child
Maurits Visser, the 31-year-old Bloemendaal goalkeeper who earned 55 caps for the Netherlands, has announced his retirement from international hockey. Visser cited the desire to spend more time with his partner and their unborn child as primary reasons for stepping down, noting he did not want to miss his child's early months due to the team's frequent winter travel abroad. Although he debuted in 2019 and won the European title in 2023, Visser acknowledged that coach Jeroen Delmée preferred Pirmin Blaak during that period. Following Blaak's retirement after the 2024 Olympics, Visser competed for the starting position but lost out to Derk Meijer, who began the summer World Cup as the first-choice goalkeeper.
