Family of Marlies must read details of her death in Colombian media, suspect denies murder
The family of Marlies Genz (41), a woman from Schagen murdered in Colombia, has received little direct information about her death, learning details instead through Colombian media outlets. Eduardo Ramiro Mendoza Nare (38), a Venezuelan national, was arrested for qualified murder or manslaughter after being tracked via stolen AirPods he attempted to sell in Medellin. He is suspected of killing Genz in Salento by striking her with a stone and strangulation. Genz went missing on May 25 while hiking near Salento, and her body was found on May 31. Her remains were repatriated to the Netherlands for burial. Victim advocate Sébas Diekstra stated that the lack of timely communication from authorities disrupts the grieving process, as the family is forced to learn new details through news reports rather than official channels. The suspect remains in pre-trial detention and faces up to 60 years in prison.
