Demonstrators in Turkey's Üsküdar Protest Arrest of Opposition Mayor
Thousands protested in Üsküdar, Istanbul, over the arrest of opposition mayor Sinem Dedetas, detained in July 2026 with five others on corruption charges. Supporters of Yeni Parti call the arrest political persecution. After Dedetas’s 2024 election win, the first opposition victory in 30 years, political tensions rose, including disputed council votes and alleged threats to opposition members. The AK Party regained control after a second vote. Since March 2025, hundreds of opposition figures have been arrested. The government claims judicial independence, but opposition alleges political motives.
