Amsterdam Adds Over 1,300 Social Housing Units but Misses Construction Targets
Amsterdam’s social housing stock increased by 1,322 permanent units and 520 temporary units last year, Alderman Zita Pels reported. However, construction began on only 1,515 new social homes, falling short of the annual target of 1,900 to 2,500 units. Pels warned that current rental income is insufficient for long-term sustainability, necessitating loans, rent increases, or home sales. She joined a joint appeal to Housing Minister Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan to abolish the profit tax on housing associations. While 9,720 homes were improved for sustainability in 2025, challenges remain with smaller buildings and poor energy labels.
