Assefa wins Berlin marathon with torn Achilles tendon, out for six months

Ethiopian athlete Tigst Assefa underwent surgery in Munich for a torn Achilles tendon one day after winning the Berlin Marathon. Her manager Gianni Demadonna stated she will be sidelined for approximately six months. Despite the injury causing significant pain in the final stages of the race, Assefa finished with a time of 2:11:04, setting a new course record and achieving the second-fastest women's marathon time in history. She had originally aimed to challenge the world record held by Ruth Chepngetich, who is currently suspended for three years for doping violations.
