Student Refuses to Accept Grade 8 for Thesis and Wins Case in Council of State
The Dutch Council of State ruled in favor of a Leiden University student who challenged a grade reduction on his master’s thesis. Although examiners initially awarded a 9.0, they lowered it to an 8.0 because the student submitted the final version 79 hours past the deadline. The court found that while extra time could be considered, students were not clearly informed beforehand that the duration of the delay would impact the point deduction. Consequently, the examiners must reassess the grade within six weeks, taking this lack of clarity into account.
