Government Agencies Cooperate to Eliminate Penalty Payments
Several Dutch government agencies, including the IND and the Benefits Service, are collaborating to avoid paying penalty fees to citizens when procedures take too long, according to an email obtained by Trouw. The UWV is also involved in these discussions. Since 2009, such penalties have been legally required, with the IND paying nearly 100 million euros this year. Agencies cite heavy workloads and staff shortages. A proposed law change, debated in the Senate on 2026-09-22, could end asylum seekers’ right to penalties for delayed decisions.
