American sentenced to death freed after 41 years, DNA evidence does not match him
Douglas Stewart Carter, 71, has been released from Utah’s death row after more than 41 years, awaiting a new trial due to DNA evidence that does not match him. Originally convicted in 1985 for the murder of Eva Olesen based on a confession and witness testimony, Carter’s case was reopened after witnesses admitted they were bribed and threatened. The original DNA found at the scene has been retested and proven not to belong to Carter. Prosecutors have dropped the death penalty request, but charges for aggravated murder remain as authorities investigate remaining evidence and potential alternative suspects.
