Review: In the Opera 'Waiting for the Barbarians', Drama Remains at a Distance
The Dutch Reisopera’s production of Philip Glass’s opera, based on J.M. Coetzee’s novel, premiered in Groningen with music driving the drama through precise orchestration by the Noord Nederlands Orkest under Alice Farnham. Director Guy Weizman reimagines Colonel Joll as a sadistic woman portrayed by Charlotte Hellekant, while the minimalist set and surveillance projections keep the emotional intensity somewhat distant despite strong performances from Dan D’Souza and Lilian Farahani.
