Dutch 'Taghi Accomplice' Briefly at Large After Escape from Brazilian Prison
Gerel Lusiano P., a Dutch top criminal and accomplice of Ridouan Taghi, briefly escaped from the Joaquim Ferreira de Souza prison in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. He had been imprisoned since 2021 after being sentenced to twenty years in the Netherlands for attempted murder and illegal firearm possession. Along with another inmate, he overpowered a guard, seized his weapon, and fled using an improvised rope and waiting vehicles. While the other prisoner was quickly recaptured, P. was later found with a helicopter, injuring a police officer during the escape. Interpol and the US DEA searched for him due to his involvement in multiple killings, including the 2015 murder of Ronald Bakker. P. remains detained in Brazil pending extradition decisions.
