Council of State Objects to Further Increase in Traffic Fines
The Dutch Council of State has criticized Justice Minister David van Weel's plan to raise traffic fines for minor offenses in line with inflation. The advisory body notes that traffic fines have increased by over 220 percent since 1994, far outpacing the 70 percent rise in living costs, creating a disproportionate imbalance compared to penalties for serious crimes. Courts have previously reduced fines due to this skew, arguing that using fines to balance the justice budget is not a valid justification.
