AI Advises Patients to Call General Practitioner Emergency Services, Increasing Call Volume
General practitioner emergency centers in the Netherlands are experiencing a surge in phone calls, partly attributed to AI search engines advising users to contact medical services for minor issues. While InEen, the national branch association, has not yet released current figures, call volumes rose by approximately 40,000 last year and continue to climb. Approximately 74 percent of these calls are classified as low urgency, handled by triage staff who determine if immediate care is necessary. Triage workers report that patients often cite AI recommendations from tools like ChatGPT as the reason for calling, leading to longer wait times and increased frustration among some patients.
