Investigation Board for Safety: Asylum Emergency Shelter Creates Structural Insecurity for Children

The Onderzoeksraad voor Veiligheid (OvV) reported on Monday that children in asylum emergency shelters face structural insecurity, physical harm, and mental damage due to the lack of sustainable policy. With approximately 6,900 children residing in temporary locations like office buildings and ships as of July 1, 2025, the OvV highlighted risks including noise pollution, insufficient privacy, and limited access to education. OvV chairman Chris van Dam stated that accepting unsuitable locations since 2021 has lowered safety standards for children. The board urged Minister of Asylum and Migration Bart van den Brink (CDA) to reduce reliance on emergency shelters within six months and invest in a durable system to guarantee fundamental rights.
