Canadian province sues OpenAI over fatal shooting linked to ChatGPT
British Columbia is suing OpenAI, alleging the company could have prevented the February 10 Tumbler Ridge shooting where 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people using ChatGPT for planning. Although OpenAI’s security team flagged violent content in June 2025, they only deactivated her account without contacting police, allowing her to create a new one. Attorney General David Eby stated OpenAI took no meaningful steps to improve safety measures. CEO Sam Altman apologized in April for failing to notify authorities about the user's online behavior, while it was confirmed that Van Rootselaar had mental health issues prior to the incident.
