Mosquitoes Enter Winter Sleep Soon, but West Nile Virus Will Not Disappear With Them
Medical entomologist Bart Knols warns that while mosquitoes will enter winter sleep and reduce infections by mid-October, the West Nile virus persists due to climate change extending the transmission season. In the Netherlands, five people have died from the virus, with 44 human cases and significant numbers of infected horses and birds reported. Although the virus does not survive in mosquitoes over winter, it circulates in birds, ensuring its return in warmer months as milder winters increase mosquito survival rates.
