Triple Olympic Swimming Champion Mike Burton (79) Dies
Mike Burton, the American swimmer who won three Olympic gold medals, has died at age 79 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease, according to his son. Burton secured victories in the 400 and 1,500-meter freestyle at the 1968 Mexico City Games and set a world record in the 1,500-meter event at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Despite overcoming a severe childhood accident that left him with multiple fractures and a dislocated hip, as well as illness and vitamin deficiencies during his competitive years, he emerged as an unexpected champion. Following his swimming career, Burton worked as a coach in several U.S. states, including Iowa, Washington, and Montana.
