Google Faces Another Million-Euro Fine for Misusing Location Data for Ads
The Irish Data Protection Commission has fined Google €403 million for violating European privacy rules regarding user location data used for personalized advertising. The regulator, acting on behalf of other European authorities due to Google's headquarters in Ireland, stated that users lost control over their personal data because they were unaware their locations were being tracked. Graham Doyle, deputy commissioner of the DPC, emphasized this breach of fundamental privacy rights. In response, Google claims it updated its policies years ago and complies with current regulations, though it plans to appeal certain points for legal clarity.
